Dorothy Bilodeau notes that Eliza Sutcliffe married Maxeiemo Vega on 11 Feb. 1882. (?)

Mrs. Murray [evidently Walter’s wife Mercedes] was married in Chile and travelled to California with her little daughter Eliza. Her husband was drowned while on ship from Chile. Mrs. M went on to Sonoma where she met and married Walter Murray. He was there as owner of the newspaper.

After Walter’s death, Mercedes struggled financially with her large family, at one point opening a boarding house. She carried on some correspondence with her sister-in-law Anne Evans in England (see letters). She died of asthma on 9 May 1878, aged 55, just a few months after the death of her daughter Josephine (in January). In February of that same year, daughter Mercedes had been married, and in September, Elizabeth would marry.

Newspaper obituary said:
MURRAY — In this city, May 9th, 1878, of asthma, Mrs. Mercedes Murray, aged 55. It has been but a few months since we were called upon to chronicle the sudden death of one of earth's fairest, Miss Josephine Murray, and now it is our painful duty to record the unlooked-for demise of the mother, Mrs. Mercedes Murray, wife of the late Hon. Walter Murray. The deceased had been confined to her bed but two days when the destroying angel came and she breathed her last. The disease was asthma, with which Mrs. Murray had been troubled for some years, but was never previously ill.

In her death the family suffers a deep affliction, and is left without the protecting care of either parent.
