Mignonette had been seeingJohn Oliver Lee for some time before he moved to Manilla to look for markets to trade with Australia. Alfred and Rosa agreed that if Mignonette wanted to consider marriage to JOL, she should visit him in Manilla. They married in Manilla with Carl and Jean subsequently born there. Mignonette's sister Winifred went to Manilla to help with the children. The family returned via the Torres Straight. Mignonette said Thursday Island was the hottest place she had ever experienced. JOL subsequently owned a share in some ships.
