Pitminster c1872
Pitminster is a village and a parish, in the Taunton district, Somerset. The village stands under Blackdown hills, near the boundary with Devon, 4½ miles from Taunton station on the G.W.R. The parish includes the tithings of Blagdon, Duddlestone, Fulford, Leigh, Pitminster, and Trendle, and its post town and money order and telegraph office is Taunton. Acres, 5,120. Pop., 1,572. Houses, 334.

There are two mailings and a tannery. The church is Early English, and consists of nave, aisles, chancel, and porch, with tower and spire. There is a Congregational chapel, and also one for the Brethren.

Rosa left England on 13 May 1884, about 4 months after her mother died, and arrived in Australia aged 20 on 6 July 1884 aboard the Abergeldie.

Alfred paid not only Rosa's fare but that of Jane Ann Hartnell who travelled on the same ship as Rosa. Rosa is listed as Dressmaker and Plymouth Brethren, Jane as Nurse and C of Eng. Both girls are recorded as able to read and write. Both married later in 1884. Almost certainly, Jane (aged 26) acted as Rosa’s guardian in giving permission for her marriage.

Rosa is said to have been c150 cm tall, walked with limp and to have died of “TB of the hip”. She had lost sight in one eye as child in an accident with scissors wielded by her brother.
