James Elder’s wife Mary was in a state of depression while they lived in Otaheite. The ship's captain who took them to Otaheite had fallen madly in love with James's bride and when his love was rejected committed suicide. Edmund, the child born in Otaheite, is not recognised as a child of James and Mary by a lot of the family — though he is on the Hibernia shipping list when they return from Otaheite in the Hibernia on 16th February 1810. Edmund is also listed as Edmund Elder working as a carpenter and living with John Jones in Sydney. I believe he is Edmund Smith who dies in 1847 unmarried, but that needs researching.
