Mr. Cecil Machattie Smith, aged 44 years, met his death at the Cudal Show. He attended the showground to assist with the cattle pens, and was standing near the entrance of a pen containing three fat bullocks belonging to his brother, Mr. L. T. Smith, when one bullock, in an attempt to escape, rushed the railing. The centre rail bulged out of the socket and struck Mr. Smith on the left side of the face, breaking his jaw and fracturing the base of his skull. When examined by Dr. Edith Herman, of Cudal, he was found to be dead. Mr. Smith, who resided at Mirrikong, Cudal, was a native of the district, and a son of Mr. Lance Smith, of Boree, Borenore. He was educated at All Saints’ College, Bathurst, and in England. With his wife and only daughter, he was in Sydney for the opening of the spring meeting, and returned expressly for the show, of which he had been the president for the past three years. His wife and daughter were at Randwick today. When they learned the sad news they returned home by car tonight. [SMH 7 October 1926] |
