Obituary
Mr. Ernest Rule Taylor, who died at a private hospital at Orange recently, was born at Ponder's End, Middlesex, England, in 1859. He was educated at Razness Commercial School, and joined the Great Eastern Railway as an invoice clerk in the freight office. In 1882, Mr. Henry Keigwin, a friend, wrote from Australia asking Mr. Taylor to join him there in the service of his firm — then Keigwin and Harston, but afterwards Orme, Keigwin, and Co., Ltd., wine and spirit merchants, of Sydney. Mr. Taylor eventually became managing director and chairman of directors, and when the firm went into voluntary liquidation in 1930, he acted as chief liquidator. Three years after arriving in Australia, Mr. Taylor married Edith Caroline, daughter of the late Dr. O. S. Evans, of Balmain. The Taylors lived for a time in Balmain, Mr. Taylor becoming Master of the Masonic Lodge there in 1895-6. About that time they moved to Pymble. They had five children, of whom two died in infancy. Mrs. Taylor died in 1902. In 1905, Mr. Taylor married his second wife, Kathleen Gertrude Smith, whom he had met when travelling through Canada. Mr. Taylor was a keen yachtsman, and was a foundation member of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. For some years he owned an orchard near Orange.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his son, Mr. E. S. Rule Taylor, and two daughters, Mrs. Linda Rule King and Mrs. Mabel Rule Bean. Mr. Taylor was buried beside his second wife at Cudal, the service both at Orange and at the graveside being conducted by the Bishop of Bathurst. The pall-bearers were Mr. E. S. Rule Taylor, Sir Hugh Poynter, Messrs. M. B. Bean, M. Smith, and P. Finch.

A memorial service is to be held next Sunday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Church, Gordon.
