Neil Johnston McKechnie, M.A. Aberdeen University, went to Natal from Aberdeen in 1850. Acted as a tutor in Natal, then as Clerk in the Commissariat Dept, Fort Napier. In 1858 became a thatcher. Moved to Harrismith. Was trustee of first Methodist Church in Harrismith where he became a shopkeeper and town councillor and eventually Mayor. Later an elder of the first Presbyterian Church. |
