Was resident in Melbourne at the time of the arrival of Rev Kerr Johnston in 1853. Home was called Byram, St Kilda. The National Gallery of Victoria has a book presented to J D Gowan on his retirement from Lyell & Gowan and on the eve of his departure for Europe in 1872.
