The National Gallery of Victoria has a book presented to J D Gowan on his retirement from Lyell & Gowan and on the eve of his departure for Europe in 1872.

Death—Berwick Advertiser 27/3/1885: At his residence Byram St., St. Kilda, Melbourne, on the 4th Feb., John Denovan Gowan, youngest son of the late Arthur Byram Gowan, of Berwick upon Tweed, aged 55.
