Sent to England with brothers, Richard Boucher and John Vidal for their education by the first convenient opportunity as instructed by will of William James I. Members of the elder branch of family as well as descendants were sent to Eton and Oxford. In 1839 he sailed on S.S. Dumfries for Australia with his brothers but returned in 1843.

There is evidence that he bought land in the Inman Valley, South Australia. Wikipedia states that three James brothers created the James Track to their property.

Had 13 children, 7 sons, 6 daughters.

He owned a rope factory in Devon, Corrie Mills.
