Parents’ wedding—SMH 25 November 1871
Attended Mrs Johnston’s High School in Maitland where he won a prize for improvementand gained a scholarship to West Maitland Public High School. The SMH reported in 1900, Mr. R. C. Birkenhead was to-day presented with a handsome walnut cabinet for a dentist’s surgery by his former follow employees on the occasion of his retirement from the service of the Hunter District Water and Sewerage Board to enter the profession of dentistry. In 1901, there is an account of a divorce case Webb v. Webbin which Richard Birkenhead, apprentice dentist, was found to have committed adultery with the wife of his employer, George Henry Webb of Maitland. Other news reports suggest that Richard Birkenhead was father of the Webb’s child. On 25 May 1901 the press reported that Mr Webb had been fined for horse-whipping Richard Birkenhead. Dentist: The 1903 Dental Directory shows RC Birkenhead practising in West Maitland, NSW. He subsequently moved to Orange. Richard Birkenhead married Mary A Lane in Orange. She seems to have been known as Anniethen Daisy. SMH of 8 & 13 Feb 1919 says will of Stella Gertrude Brooks of Batlow appointed RC Birkenhead as Executor. It is believed that the Birkenheads adopted Stella’s two daughters after her premature death. |
