The Argus of 26 January 1934 reported:

CONSTABLE LOCKED IN KIOSK

Arrests Intruder at Pistol Point

At the Sandringham Court on Wednesday, Thomas Henry Goodwin, aged 25 years, an employee at the returned soldiers' carnival on the Sandringham beach, was charged with having broken and entered a kiosk, the property of the carnival committee with intent to commit a felony. Maurice Rosier shopkeeper of Sandringham said that by arrangement with the police he locked First Constable Arthur Martyn in his kiosk at the carnival grounds at 11.15 p.m. on Tuesday. The shutters of the kiosk were padlocked. Constable Martyn said that about an hour after he was locked in the kiosk he heard voices outside. The shutters were opened and witness switched on his torch. He saw Goodwin standing near the entrance to the kiosk. Witness drew his pistol and asked Goodwin what he was doing Goodwin replied, I don't know. I’m a fool. The padlock had been forced but Goodwin denied that he had forced it.

Goodwin who reserved his defence was committed for trial in General Sessions on February 1
