Obituary in SMH of 23 November 1927

MR. W. H. MATE.
ALBURY, Tuesday.
The death occurred yesterday of Mr. William Henry Mate, a well-known sportsman and Riverina grazier. Up to the time of his death, he conducted a stud on his property, Tarcutta Station, in the Wagga district, and owned and bred a number of horses. The most famous amongst his horses was Ibex, winner of the Caulfield Guineas in 1901, and the Craven Plate in Sydney a year or two later. Another of his horses won the Hopetoun Cup at the meeting at Randwick, held to celebrate the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia. Deceased was aged 56, and was the second son of the late Mr. T. H. Mate, of Albury, and was from 1890 to 1907 a director of T. H. Mate and Co. Ltd., one of the oldest established business houses in the Riverina. About seven years ago the Government resumed about 25,000 acres of his property, which formerly comprised 30,000 acres for closer settlement purposes. He is survived by Mrs. Mate.
