A/Prof Mech Engineering, University of Newcastle, NSW.

Attended Cammeray Public School where he won a scholarship to Sydney Grammar School. SMH of 18 January 1932 comments on Kerr’s Intermediate certificate results as equal best in NSW from a non-State Secondary school.

In the school hall of Sydney Grammar School the honour rolls indicate that in 1933, one A. K. Johnston shared with A. G. Basser the Wigram Allen Prize for Mathematics, and the Senior Knox Prize (the overall result of all subjects). He would have turned 16 in November 1933, at about the time of the exams and was thus too young for university.(Is this true?) So he worked for a year and sat the Leaving Certificate exams again to obtain an exhibition (scholarship).

BE (Syd 1938) PhD (Newcastle); studied at Iowa State University for some time. Moved to Newcastle in 1953. Assoc. Prof. of Mech. Eng. at Newcastle Uni 1952-88.

In retirement, taught English, French etc. at a mission in Korea. Author of The Making of Engineers in the Hunter Valley (1985). Lived latterly in Woodberry.
